This past Sunday, I played with the Waterbury Symphony. One of the pieces on the program was "España, rapsodie pour orchestre" by Chabrier (1841-1894). Chabrier, as his name suggests, is a French composer and he wrote this piece after he toured Spain in 1883.
Look what Chabrier wrote as instruction; velouté. I had no idea what that meant, had never even seen it. But our principal player clarified that it's not a usual musical term and it means "cream soup" in French. Also "velvet" so it probably means to play smoothly and richly. That's a yummy "musical" term, Mr. Chabrier :-)
