I hope you all had a great summer! I took some time off this summer, went to Japan to visit family and friends and traveled domestically (thanks to the glorious JR Pass -- I got to visit about 20 places by bullet trains).
In mid-July I went to a shrine to hear a gagaku performance in Tokyo. It was to be dedicated to the God. The altar has a decoration for the traditional tanabata star festival.

They performed Etenraku and I got so excited about hearing the original version (the link takes you to my violin and piano version video). Here's the video.
For three or four pieces, there were dancers. The dance is very traditional, though very differnet from that of kabuki.
On the altar was a set of instruments.

Gagaku is not performed often these days. Maybe at shinto services but it is rare to see a concert/performance of it. I'm glad I found out about this performance (I think I just googled "gagaku performance tokyo" and prayed there is one during my stay).
